"Music is the shorthand of emotion."
"Music is the divine way to tell beautiful, poetic things to the heart."
"Music happens to be an artform that transcends language."
"I see music as fluid architecture." ~ Joni Mitchell
The power of music to give rise to emotion is the reason I love incorporating it into my audiobooks. It enhances the drama and provides atmosphere for what the characters are experiencing. In JOURNEYS I have integrated A LOT of music. Each chapter has its distinct "soundtrack" evoking the theme of that particular moment in the character's journey.
Today I selected the final piece of music to be used as underscore for the opening and end credits, providing some nice bookends for the overall story. As I listened to several samples trying to find the perfect "vibe," I was amazed at how differently I felt with each selection. It was fascinating how quickly I could ascertain whether or not something would work. That power to immediately provoke sensations inside the deepest parts of my soul is why music is such a miracle. What a gift we humans have been given!
Incidentally, as I was researching quotes about the power of music to use for this blog post, I found it quite curious that the majority of the quotes I discovered were by men. When I went in search for quotes specifically by women, the vast majority of the ones I found all had to do with how difficult it is to be female in such a male-dominated business and how much scrutiny is paid to a woman's appearance rather than her talent as a musician/singer/artist/performer. I am sure plenty of female song-makers have had lots of brilliant things to say about the power of music (Thanks, Joni Mitchell). So, WTF!!!???
Ugggh.
Clearly, I will need to write an entire blog post about that nonsense.
